1865
Full Description

On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia. The Civil War was over, and slavery was abolished. However, the South would find new systems of oppression, and the promise of freedom for Black people remained uncertain.
