1961
Full Description
On March 27, 1961, nine Tougaloo College students staged a “read-in” at the Jackson Public Library. Medgar Evers met with the students and contacted the press to ensure coverage. The students were charged with “breach of the peace,” and remained in jail for 32 hours while the sheriff delayed attempts by attorney Jack Young to post bail.
