1963
Full Description
As Mississippi’s first NAACP Field Secretary, Evers played a critical role in establishing new NAACP chapters, voter registration drives, and protesting Jim Crow laws. His work made him a target of White supremacists, particularly after his investigations of the murders of Emmett Till and Clyde Kennard. Several attacks were made against Evers before he was assassinated in his driveway on June 12, 1963, by KKK member Byron De La Beckwith.
